How to keep the light

You keep the lighthouse on a storm coast. Ships run for the harbour through the dark; turn the beam onto them and bring them home.

• Light a ship and it knows its way: it steers round the rocks toward the harbour. Out of the light it soon loses its bearing, wanders and drifts with the current.
• Fog wraiths creep toward the lamp and sea shadows hunt the ships. Hold the beam on them to burn them away. A wraith at the lighthouse douses the lamp and spills oil; a shadow at a hull spooks the crew, who ignore the light for a while.
• Focus narrows the beam: it reaches much further, cuts through fog and burns hot, but it turns slower, drains oil and heats the lamp. Overheat it and you are stuck on the wide beam until it cools.
• Oil drains all night. Every ship you bring home refills it; trawlers refill the most.
• Weather shortens the beam and pushes blind ships. At dawn the sky lightens: ships can see the harbour and wraiths fade.
• Save the goal number of ships to pass the night. Save more for silver and gold. Your best night replays as a ghost beam.

Mouse: point to aim, hold a button to focus. Touch: drag anywhere to aim, hold FOCUS. Keyboard: A/D or arrows to turn, Space or Shift to focus, P or Esc pause, R restart, G ghost. Gamepad: left stick aims, A or right trigger focuses, Start pauses.

Everything you see is painted in code on a canvas, and every sound is synthesized live in the browser. No libraries, no image or audio files, no network requests.
